Reporting and Writing

Reporting and writing has taught me how to be both patient and adventurous. For example, when writing, I needed to get out of my confront shell and try new ideas. For reporting, I needed to interview with patience and make sure the people I interview are in good hands and feel comfortable. Reporting is also important so we have word-for-word information.

Practicing taking shots in different lighting, communications junior and multimedia staffer Issac Wright participates in a photography workshop with fellow Muse and Marquee staffers.

“Everyone was working together, everyone was learning, [and] everyone was paying attention,” Wright said. “I've always been kind of intimidated using the studio [...] but now that [I have], I am much more open to using that and now I'm more open to filming in different locations.”

Barbra Lawless, a professional photographer, came to Dreyfoos to help staffers in the multimedia and photography sections of The Muse and The Marquee grasp the basics of a camera.

Starting season two, communication juniors and multimedia staffers Riley Flynn and Dylan Dam continue to work on “The Double,” The Muse’s podcast. The main focus of this season consists of specific topics about who Dreyfoos students are. One episode is about being raised in multicultural environments and other episodes include Dreyfoos news recaps.

“We started this podcast as a way for students to get their news in a new and interactive way,” Flynn said. “It's a wonderful opportunity for people to get involved with The Muse.”

Research and Quotes

Some of The Muse editors attended the Florida Scholastic Press Association convention last weekend in Orlando. This convention allowed the students to increase their skills in journalism and work with students from other schools.

These students participated in workshops such as solving people problems and marketing strategies, along with meeting famous journalists such as Chris Vazquez and Carmella Boykin from the Washington Post TikTok team

“Overall, their presentation was lighthearted, fun, and full of TikToks” communications senior and Muse Editor in Chief Sophia Roud said. “They emphasized the importance of developing an idea of what your dream career could look like, then looking at what steps you would have to take to achieve that career.”

At the convention, The Muse was awarded Sunshine Standouts for the print magazine as well as the online website, while individual awards were given out to Allison Robbert for Photojournalist Of The Year, Alissa Gary for Multimedia/Web Journalist of the Year, and Kaja Andric for Writer of the Year.

This caption is very important to me because I had to interview people that were not at school. This meant I had to text them and make sure they answered as soon as they could. FSPA is very important so I wanted to cover it and show how hard The Muse has worked since the beginning of the year. It was very difficult because I was not able to get their repsonses right away, like how I would if I were to interview them in person. However, I am very happy how the caption turned out.

This was the first time I ever did a breaking news piece and I found it very resourceful due to the fact a lot of people were reposting it. I had to do it in a timely manner, which was a difficulty because I had never done a post in 30 minutes. This shows reporting and writing because I had to look at an email and analyze what it was saying in order to paraphrase it. However, it made me realize that I always need to be ready for what ever, whenever!
